Gregory Hines & Steve Martin Tap Broadcast November 25, 1981 -- Veteran dancer Gregory Hines (1946-2003) dances a duet with "beginner" Steve Martin (born 1945), who says he has just completed his "first MGM musical," "Pennies from Heaven." This was a bright spot in an era of few TV variety shows. Greg Hines was already beloved in the worldwide dance communities, and Martin was carving a niche for himself in traditional Terpsichore, which was insignificant to most entertainers in 1981. This was, after all, four years before the MGM film "That's Dancin'" validated the work of many old song and dance artists. The song "Fit As A Fiddle" was written in 1932 by Arthur Freed (lyrics) and Al Goodhart & Al Hoffman (music). This little bit of show biz gave Martin another well-deserved feather in his cap, one that set him apart from any other stand up or sketch comedian. |
